Digital X-ray in Lucknow: what it shows, and what it misses

An X-ray remains the fastest, cheapest and most available answer to a large set of clinical questions — a suspected fracture, a chest infection, a look at the joints. Digital X-ray produces the image electronically, which allows a lower dose and a far quicker report than film.
Its limits are as worth knowing as its strengths, because a normal X-ray is frequently misread by patients as an all-clear it was never able to give.
What it is good at
X-rays show dense structures well. Bone is the obvious one: fractures, dislocations, joint changes and bone alignment. In the chest it shows the lung fields, heart size and outline, and the diaphragm — which is why it is the first test in cough, fever with breathlessness, or suspected pneumonia or tuberculosis.
It is also the workhorse before surgery, in injury, and in dental and sinus assessment.
What it misses
Soft tissue detail is where an X-ray is weak. Ligaments, cartilage, discs, the spinal cord, most abdominal organs and the brain are largely invisible on a plain film — those are MRI and CT questions.
A specific and important one: a normal chest X-ray does not exclude early lung cancer, small clots, or early interstitial disease. A stress fracture can also be invisible on the first film and only appear a week or two later. If symptoms persist despite a normal X-ray, that is a reason to go back to your doctor, not a reason to be reassured.

Radiation, pregnancy and practicalities
The dose from a single chest X-ray is very small — comparable to a few days of ordinary background radiation. That is not a reason to have one without cause, but it is a reason not to refuse a clinically indicated X-ray out of fear.
Pregnancy must always be declared before any X-ray, and there is no awkwardness in saying so. Remove jewellery and metal from the area; you will usually be asked to change into a gown. Most X-rays take a couple of minutes, and at Charak they are reported by consultant radiologists in the same building at Chowk as CT, MRI and pathology.
